All the stories revolving around this incident confirm that Charlie Parker didn't apreciate being called a "boy." Chan Parker, Bird's wife who was a white woman, points out that Bird gives the TV host a cold stare due to Earl's racist remark. Just think about that word within the context of the time. Why do you think Bird said, "music speaks louder than words, so we'd rather voice our opinion that way." White America isn't ready for the truth of its own racism, only in the abstract.

appreciate your reply cordovarancho. My comment was based purely on the piss poor attitude of the comments I was reading altogether and not really whether the story is true or not. And from all the comments, it does not seem anyone knows for sure. It's just reverse racism and an excuse to pour out ones misguided hatred( towards anything for that matter). It's pathetic and sad. It seems like the opinions of little ignorant children.

If these people were able to cite actual evidence or some validating argument, then I would be more than happy to accept it, and to investigate the claims, because I love Bird and i'm more than willing to argue his side. But that's not the case... at all.

Incredible that there is footage this old. Thanks for posting! I am black and missed the "boy" statement until reading some comments. I'm not convinced that it was racist, as the white men were both quite a bit older than Bird and Diz. It seemed that the hosts were trying to be respectful: The guy first said "Diz" and then corrected himself and called him "Dizzy." Parker was 31 at the time of this recording.

All the arguing over someone saying "boy" reminds me a bit of a story a guy i work with told me. He had his dog in his van and the back window was broke out so why this black guy was walking by the back of the van the dog acted like he was going to jump out and get him but he didn't... it scared the guy I guess and he got all mad and said to the driver, "hey man your dog almost bit me! (driver)Well did he bite you, are you going to make it? Do you want me to let him out to bite you? hahaha

this footage is almost 60 years old.how do I know?1.Parker was born in 1920,Dizzy in 1917 so you tellthat neither of them are 40 in this footage.2.The host mentioned the award that Bird received was for best alto sax of 1951.3.Bird died in 1955.
