Typical Hollywood revisionism it appears. They were funding terrorists prior to the Soviet invasion, because the nation had an independant reformist government. The people the US was supporting were burning the faces off women with acid.
It was US intervention that caused the Soviet invasion, resulting in the deaths of over a million people.

The Soviets invaded Afghanistan to quell what they saw as a renegade "Client" State. Their goal was to keep Afghanistan loyal to the USSR.
The United States invaded Afghanistan to REMOVE a government that tortured its own people and put many other nations as risk by their actions (the US included)
When the Soviets left, they intended to leave a USSR controlled puppet, when we leave they will have an independent government.
THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE.
