I was wrong. Mr. Brooks was an alcoholic and he made up this character to spoof his own problem. He did quit drinking heavily but this "lush" was perfect for him

They, and Johnny Carson, could verge on the edge of it when they had to, but it was never their usual weapon.
And folks such as Richard Pryor and George Carlin could use it consistently because their brand of shock was/is not the be all and end all of their delivery...it was all about understanding of our foibles.
Even now, Chris Rock, Carlin and Lewis Black are that way. Too bad so many comics use harsh words like a drunk uses a lamppost - as support, instead of illumination.

Foster Brooks played the classic drunk role as well as, or better than, anyone ever did. But he was far from a one-dimensional talent. He could write poetry/music, and had a terrific singing voice also. A great talent.
